From small workshop

to global market leader

Manfred Roth: A life for the family business

A retrospective and a vision
Manfred Roth joined his father Heinrich Roth's company in 1961 at the age of 21 and took over responsibility early on due to his father's illness. At that time, the company produced handcrafted boiler furnaces in Silberg and Mornshausen. Manfred Roth was convinced that in order to be successful in the long term, the monostructure had to be overcome. His goal was to develop the family business, founded in 1947, into a diversified industrial company with several market-leading business areas.

University studies close to the company
Manfred Roth had to give up his mechanical engineering studies at RWTH Aachen University when he joined the company. In 1963, he began studying economics at the Philipps University of Marburg, which he completed in 1968 with a degree in economics - in close proximity to the company.

From a craftsman's business to world market leader
Manfred Roth systematically developed the company into an international industrial enterprise. Under the motto “One brand - many strengths”, Roth Industries is now one of the most innovative providers of building and industrial technology with around 1,400 employees and 28 locations worldwide. The areas of expertise of energy, water and plastics form the basis for synergies and innovative strength. Roth is the world market leader in the fields of energy storage systems, surface heating and cooling systems and composite technologies - confirmed by its entry in the “Lexicon of German World Market Leaders”.

Responsibility for the environment and society
Manfred Roth is strongly committed to the environment, the economy and society. His own environmental management system and numerous awards bear witness to this. From 1990 to 2001, he was President of the Dillenburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce. In 2007, he was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Roth supports social and cultural projects, club life and educational institutions - he is particularly associated with the Philipps University of Marburg.

Milestones

1947

The company was founded in 1947 as a craft business.

  • From the company foundation immediately after the end of the Second World War, a healthy enterprise developed with the most modest means.
  • The company Bögel & Roth with its product range of boiler stoves and the handicraft productions in Silberg and Mornshausen represent the founding phase of our company.
  • After a start-up, a modest annual turnover of 25,000 DM was achieved in the 1940s. At the beginning of the 1950s, the annual turnover exceeded 100,000 DM. It rose to 265,000 DM by 1957. After that, sales fell continuously, so that boiler furnace production was finally discontinued in the mid-1960s. The average number of employees during the founding phase was 10.

1960s

Entry into the heating and sanitary industry

  • The addition of the new products steel heating oil tanks and shower cabins gave the company its first major development push.
  • The change of industry to heating and sanitary engineering determined the company's orientation towards the building services sector.
  • The overcoming of the craft monostructure to a serial production of heating and sanitary products initiated the development to a diversified industrial company.
  • Annual sales developed from about 200,000 DM to about five million DM in 1969. In the following year, our sales of steel tanks increased by another 50 percent until they finally collapsed. The number of employees increased from 10 to 77.

1970s

Start in plastics technology

  • By entering the field of plastics technology, we were subsequently able to develop the expansive field of plastics expertise.
  • Large blow molding technology made us the global technology leader.
  • Polyethylene fuel oil tanks became the basic products for our later energy and water storage tanks as well as sewage treatment plants made of plastic.
  • With the tool shop Wolfgruben (today Roth Plastic Technologie) and the mechanical engineering Schlesinger (today Roth Composite Machinery) the first steps into the capital goods sector could be taken.
  • The foundation of Roth France initiated the internationalization in the building technology sector.
  • The 1970s were the greatest period of expansion for our company.
  • Major investments were made to build up considerable blow molding capacities for large containers, which brought us strong sales growth. Annual sales increased extraordinarily during this period. The sales level at the end of the 1970s reached ten times the level at the beginning of the decade. The number of employees rose to 450.

1980s

Focus on energy systems

  • Program expansions in building technology led the company into the forward-looking energy and sanitary systems divisions.
  • The opening of the plastics injection molding shop and the founding of Roth Kunststofftechnik, Wolfgruben, expanded our plastics business segment.
  • The purchase of Bolenz & Schäfer, Eckelshausen (today Roth Hydraulics), initiated the expansion into hydraulics and composite technologies.
  • Despite poor business conditions at the beginning of the decade, we were able to significantly more than double annual sales. The number of employees increased to around 800, with per capita sales rising by around a third.

1990s

Expansion into hydraulic and composite technologies

  • Expansion into the Hydraulic Technology division through innovations and hydraulic system solutions based on piston accumulator technology.
  • Establishment of the Composite Technology division through
    • Acquisition and expansion of the company EHA Spezialmaschinenbau (today Roth Composite Machinery)
    • Integration of the composite systems of Bolenz & Schäfer into EHA (today Roth Hydraulics and Roth Composite Machinery)
    • Cooperation EHA - Schlesinger (today united under Roth Composite Machinery)
  • The following expansions took place in the building technology sector:
  • The expansion of the Hydraulics and Composite Technologies divisions and the further development of Building Technology increased our annual sales by almost two thirds. The number of employees increased to 1,100.

2000s

Worldwide corporate expansion

  • The company's expansion continued dynamically in both business areas despite the fact that the first years and final years of the first decade of the new century were marked by global crises.
  • By focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energies, a new driving force for global corporate development was activated.
  • Successes of German companies:
    • Roth Werke, Buchenau, with new forward-looking energy and sanitary systems and the establishment of a modern logistics center
    • Roth Umwelttechnik, Bischofswerda, with new product ranges and capacity expansions
    • Roth Plastic Technology, Wolfgruben, with new product ranges and capacity expansions
    • Roth Hydraulics, Eckelshausen, with new product ranges and capacity expansions
    • Roth Composite Machinery, Steffenberg and Burgwald, with new product ranges and capacity expansions
  • Start of foreign production companies:
    • Roth Global Plastic, Tudela/Spain
    • Roth Industries, Watertown/USA, with capacity expansion
    • Roth Global Plastics, Syracuse/USA, with program expansions

2010s

Harmonization of many strengths under one brand

An important step for the joint further development of our companies was the harmonization of the different divisions under the name "Roth". Since the summer of 2016, all of our companies (with the exception of Becker Plastics) have borne the name Roth as well as a corporate suffix.

  • Start of foreign production companies:
    • Roth Hydraulics, Taicang/China
    • Roth Hydraulics Syracuse/USA
    • Roltechnik (now Roth Czech s.r.o.), Třebařov, Červená Voda and Krasikov/Czech Republic.

In 2020, the divisional consolidated sales of our company amounted to 293 million euros. The number of employees increased to 1,340.
